Feaga 2015: 80 cheeses from different communities enrolled in the thirteenth Tabefe Awards – Fuerteventura
About 80 cheeses from the islands and several regions have registered to participate in tastings of the thirteenth national competition of goat milk cheeses 'Tabefe Awards - Fuerteventura', that from tomorrow Thursday would begin to develop in their initial selection phase. Registration remains open until 12.00 hours on Thursday.
The organization estimates that this year around a hundred cheeses would concur. A new feature is the presence for the first time of goat milk cheeses from the Designation of Origin Camorana, La Rioja. Joining them cheeses from Castilla La Mancha, Murcia, Asturias, Cantabria and all the islands, where cheese is made exclusively from goat's milk benefiting from designations of origin. Is also very remarkable the increase of cheese farms in Lanzarote that are already registered to send their products to the contest.
The National Cheese Contest will involve a team of tasters responsible for selecting and rate the different samples in successive classifications. It will be comprised by:

The 'Tabefe Awards' are a national benchmark for producers of cheese made from goat's milk.
The whole cheeses must be submitted with a minimum weight of 1.5 kilos. In the case of commercial presentation format is less than the indicated weight, the number of adequate and equal parts (the same batch) will be presented to overcome it.
The cheeses entered in the competition will be included in two classes: Class P for cheeses made from pasteurized milk and Class C for cheeses made from raw milk.
And in three groups for each class, according to the maturation period: Group 1 for soft cheeses, between 8 and 20 days of ripening; Group 2 for semi-hard cheeses, between 21 and 60 days of ripening; and Group 3 for cured cheeses, with 60 days of ripening.
Once separated, the cheese will be punctuated by a dozen tasters, evaluating criteria such as their organoleptic characteristics, taste, presentation, etc. According to these scores the final selection would be made.
The awards consist of an allegorical trophy made by an insular craftsman, a cash prize (thousand euros) and a second prize (500 euros) for each of the groups in the competition.
However, if the organization wishes it, it could grant more runners to cheeses that have been worthy of it.
Among the contestants from the archipelago, the jury will designate the 'Best cheese from the Canaries 2015' regardless of the group that is competing, equipped with an allegorical trophy and a thousand euros.
