Biotechnologies and Health Sciences

A natural macro laboratory with one of the richest biodiversities in the world

Resources:

Natural: more than 14,000 terrestrial species, 600 endemic species and 550 marine species registered= Canary Islands accounts for 80% of all Spanish biodiversity.

Research: 150 research groups at the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and 150 research groups at the University of La Laguna.

1 of the 3 Spanish faculties of Marine Science, along with other outstanding faculties such as Medicine, Veterinary Science, Chemistry and Pharm

Marine Biotechnology:

Pioneers since the 90’s in marine biotechnology, the Marine Biotechnology Centre is the site of the National Algae Bank founded in 1998 and recognized as an International Depositary Authority in 2005; it currently houses 150 strains. On the other hand, the Agramar Foundation currently houses 1500 strains.

The Canary Islands Marine Science Institute (ICCM) conducts and promotes research and technological development work in the field of marine science, cooperates as an R+D horizontal policy platform and assists with environmental education.

Agricultural Biotechnology:

The Natural and Agro-Biology Products Institute (IPNA_CSIC), the leading Spanish centre and a European reference under the European Science Foundation, specializes in radical chemistry, biotransformations and increasing the value of natural products. It collaborates with companies like FAES Farmacéutica.

El Instituto Canario de Investigaciones Agrarias (ICIA). Currently, the ICIA has a staff of fifty researchers and agricultural engineers and a hundred research and technical transfer support personnel. Some of its main responsibilities include the creation and execution of research projects that tend to increase the competitiveness of agricultural productions.

Health Biotechnology:

4 research units from the 4 benchmark Hospitals of the public healthcare system.

The low mobility of the permanent population allows for full traceability in studies and clinical trials.

Particularly noteworthy is the Canary Islands Research and Health Foundation (FUNCIS), the primary objective of which is to promote research activities in health science and disseminate knowledge in the field of biomedical research and its effective application in order to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
